Rapper Mos Def has been officially dethroned from the top spot on my celebrity hotties list. My new number one is Howard Zinn. {just kidding! Most Def fo life!!}
Why did I just discover him tho, y’all??! It’s 2015! He’s written like 300 books! Well, maybe just 35. And has a movie on Netflix! And yes, I know he’s dead and he’d be 92 if he were alive, but maaan he had some sexyass ways of thinking! And, unlike Malcolm X and Dr. King, he was able to live a long, full life, stimulate so many minds and make the world a smarter, more progressive place. Just an extremely intelligent, optimistic, wordy and worldly man who was truly for the people.
A few Howard Zinn quotes:
“There is no flag large enough to cover the shame of killing innocent people.”
Ugh I feel this one so tough cuz of the recent deal with Eric Sheppard. So much more news coverage and disgust was shown toward Eric’s actions than the recent killings of our Black brothers! A flag > a human, basically.
“How can you have a war on terrorism when war itself is terrorism?”
Howard gets it. From the beginning of time [in America], that’s how they get things done. They just have this very clever way of never calling it terrorism.
“I’m worried that students will take their obedient place in society and look to become successful cogs in the wheel – let the wheel spin them around as it wants without taking a look at what they’re doing. I’m concerned that students not become passive acceptors of the official doctrine that’s handed down to them from the White House, the media, textbooks, teachers and preachers.”
Oh, Howard! Take me now! This is EXACTLY what is happening! Right before my eyes. Most Americans just do what they’re told and keep their heads down-only believing the rights and wrongs that are fed to them through these popular avenues. Everyone is so scared and jaded to even try. Rockefeller still has the nation of workers [not thinkers] he said he wanted.
“Protest beyond the law is not a departure from democracy; it is absolutely essential to it.”
Thank you, Howard. Call me crazy but I really wish I was in B’more for these protests.
“We don’t have to engage in grand, heroic actions to participate in the process of change. Small acts, when multiplied by millions of people, can transform the world.”
Do you understand the magnitude of force we’d have if we band together? The sick, power trippin, egotistical, immoral 1% would magically disappear. I live for the day.
Just some food for thought this humpday. RIP Howard Zinn and Freddie Gray.
