My nephew starts pre-K today! It’s bittersweet. Thought I’d share this dope video that encourages kids of all ages to read. We, as a village, need to put down our gadgets sometimes and heed these lyrics too- set an example and make reading cool again.

Lately I find myself reading more blogs and articles online instead of books. My library is literally collecting dust (pun!) What about you? What’s the last book you read?

  1. Oh my goodness! You always share the coolest knowledge givers. I needed this extra push Queen! And the last book I “read” was “Memoir’s of a Geisha,” and I cheated with that because I listened to 80% via audiobook before I actually started reading the book. 💕

      1. I think it lays out some of the origins of the police departments and prison industrial system well. It definitely has opened my eyes up to what has and is still happening in our communities. It’s set up for failure, as we have always said. This book lays out just how they have set it up. I like it thus far.

  4. Well, at least your nephew is getting an early start on his education. He should be fine. smile

    I hate to say this, but I’ve only managed to read two books this summer and both were too frivolous for me to post here as I’d be laughed off the comment board. Needless to say, I do have a defense. I have been carjacked, bus robbed, shot at and I am in the process of fleeing Baltimore, for my life. No exaggeration there, believe me.

    And I beg you, please send not a one of your family members to Baltimore, don’t even send them if you consider them to be your worst enemy. So, is it any wonder I’ve needed a bit of fantasy amidst all of the chaos, pandemonium and bedlam that’s been my life? No need to answer that. And this in the city with a slogan, “Baltimore, The City That Reads!” Yeah, right!

    1. Shelby! Sending prayers and positive vibes your way! That is NUTS, and yes, it sounds like a primetime show. You don’t need a defense to not reading much lately; wishing you better circumstances much sooner than later.

    2. WTF! We’re glad that you’re still here pushing. My overthinking mind wonders if all of the nonsense happening in Baltimore is being pushed by some hidden powers in order for the takeover (gentrification) in Baltimore to look better in the eyes of the their people.

      1. There is an agenda there for sure and it is not even being cleverly concealed. I have already moved from there. My internet service will not be on for awhile as my new home is not ready yet and I am using this stupid little smartphone that I hate. I will write more about what is going on when my service is up and running again.

  5. The Bible is the last book i read! I used to read ALOT of books, mainly romance. But then I stopped because I realized tht with all the regular books I had read in my short lifetime, I could have read the Bible over 20 times, maybe even more than tht! So I stopped reading and focused on the Bible. Then I picked reading back up but only read inspirational/Godly books! Books tht would lead me to the Bible! Joyce Meyer’s Battlefield of the Mind is a good one!…Good post!

  6. It’s really good, but it made me curious enough to do some research. Apparently, the writer caused a lot of hell for the former Geisha who gave him the information about Geisha life, so now I want to read the book written by her. I haven’t really been a big time book reader since like middle school, but I love love collecting books, so mustn’t let them go to waste.

  7. Last book I read is called Buying Time, if you like mysteries, then that’s the book for you (African American author and characters). A book I would really recommend is Twelve Tribes of Hattie. You might enjoy it and it’s an easy, yet deep (fictional) read that shows flaws of the Great Migration for Black people as well as some other important murky and realistic situations.

  8. That’s hilarious! Your question happens to be the Q&A for this week from my Q&A a Day Book. LOL! I’m browsing through CONDUIT by our good(e) friend, Jon Goode (see what i did there?) currently. Taking my time with it. It’s one of those books you don’t run through in one sitting. You read a short story or poem, contemplate for a few days, then come back and read another. I’ve been checking out articles articles here and there too even though i have a growing list of books i want to purchase.

    1. Ha! I misplaced my Conduit, but I do love a good book of short stories; there is something.. noncommittal about them hehe! You’re right about taking your time with them. Bone by Yrsa Daley-Ward is a good one too.

  9. I received my first set of books from my father when I was first born. Classics. Moby Dick, The Count of Monte Cristo and others. I could read by the time I was four. I hope your nephew learns to love books. With you around I’m sure he will. During June I realized I missed stretching out on the bed and reading a good book so I got my go to book-Complete Stories and Poems of Edgar Allen Poe. He was a strange one. But I like strange, mysterious, sci-fi stuff. He had an interesting take on Black people, though he didn’t write about them much. Blacks were included in one of his stories about being on a ship in a storm and the Blacks knowing more than anyone on the ship. And his poems are the only ones I like. Have you read Annabelle Lee? I look normal but have weird tastes. I love John Grisham. And Toni Morrison.

    1. Ah, he does love books already! Thank goodness. Like your father, we understand you have to instill certain values in them early and, of course, foster their interests.

      That’s interesting about EAP; I’m sure he got some flack for that notion. I’ve never heard of Annabelle Lee; I’ll have to look her up. And I’ve read a few novels by Morrison but it’s been ages.

  10. My book count right no\w is high! Especially when during those months I didn’t have the internet. I am working on knocking out a different book every 3 to 4 days. I want to become a speed reader and knock out a book a day. My mind’s eye is buzzing hard right now.

          1. I’m like a sponge when it comes to knowledge. Once it is in my mind it’s there for good. I am reading this book now that said, “Knowledge is power” is incorrect. It should read more like, “Applied knowledge is power.” Having it and not doing anything with it is useless. I am trying to apply the principles that I have been reading about into my life.

  11. The whole time I was watching this I was smiling and realizing, I need to take heed to the song’s message. I did read How to Be A Bawse by Lilly Singh and started reading Daring Greatly this summer so I am not totally out of it but I can definitely get better at reading a book!
