Killing Like Twelve Birds With One Stone: How I Maximized a Two-Day Trip in D.C. pt.2

Ok, so part two, the meat of my trip!

I forgot to tell y’all that the event was held at Nubian Hueman so you know I was hype! I also spent all my coins. Happily.

As I mentioned, Lisa Marie dropped all her gems that fateful night in October. Like, everything resonated with me! She started the conversation by talking about the changes autumn brings—not just cooler weather but shorter days and a change in the landscape. I’ve never been a fan of cold weather until Lisa Marie broke this all the way down. Being from L.A. you get kind of spoiled with pleasant temperatures almost year round. Even  growing up in Vegas, summer seemed to span half the year! So, needless to say, cold weather is not my jam. BUT I can’t change the weather. Even if I moved back to the west coast, it’s not guaranteed that it’ll never rain (or snow!) in southern California.

Lisa Marie’s suggestions?: prepare. Duh. Don’t wait around acting like winter might not come this year. Get your cold weather gear in order. If your wardrobe needs a refresh, go shopping. And don’t forget the cocoa, tea and soup ingredients.

Point two? Simply embrace it. The seasons will change—in weather. In friendships. In opportunities. You have to roll with the punches and not let them roll you. So instead of going out to all the festivals, barbecues, sports games and pool parties that we enjoy in warmer months, winter is for ladies’ night in (which I’ve already done more than once, and it’s not even winter yet! WHAT?!) Not very social? Me either! So just skip happy hour and go home after work. Take time to enjoy the long nights. Make your home your sanctuary.

After reading over and revising this post, I should have shared it immediately after my return for my readers who, like me, may not even know they need a little boost to get through the chilly season. I have actually used Lisa Marie’s advice and, although I am still not the biggest fan of cold weather besides the fashion, I’m a work in progress, y’all. I know winter is a necessary, beautiful, inevitable part of life, so until I can escape to a tropical island every time that chill hits my skin, what is the point of complaining? The days will be short and cold, periodt. The trees and other plant life will be appear dead-ish and bare no matter what, but I know that’s what nature needs to bloom new life come March. Just like people, Earth needs balance. I’ve also been meal planning more (so I don’t have to leave the warmth of my home every time I need to nourish myself) and Pinterest is my bff with the endless list of crockpot and soup recipes. All I need is an app to clean the kitchen afterwards 🙂

It may seem futile, that chatting about the changing season really changed my perspective, but it be like that. I’m sure the word being delivered by Lisa Marie helped. Sometimes all it takes is one conversation to change your mind.

What about you? Do you do anything in particular to prepare for the changing weather? Are you a recently converted ex winter hater like me?

  1. I was born and raised in New York so even though I dislike winter I deal with it. At least now that I’m retired I don’t have to fight the Snow, ice and blizzards like before but I remain prepared. Since I can’t hibernate I get my winter clothes and snow boots on the ready starting in November. Of course I pay close attention to the forecast because weather impacts transportation.

However in my dreams I’m on the beach in Hawaii! 🏖☀️🌝🌞⛱

  2. Love this post! The change of seasons can be tough! Nights are longer temperatures drop (but I live in the Bay Area so can I really complain about the cold?) Winter for me means fireplace and hot chocolate. Downside for me, dark at 5 PM! I’m sleepy by 6:30 and uh who’s going to bed that early? Lol

    1. Yes, The Bay is almost always pleasant too! But I think you’re allowed to complain anyway hehe
I say go ahead and go to bed at 6:30 and wake up earlier so you have more time with the sun!

  3. I’ve always loved cold weather, hence why I miss Minnesota and may very well go back. While living in Minnesota, I learned to really appreciate winter because you have to don the ‘layered look’ in order to be completely comfortable even when the temperature was -30. I love snow and wow, did it snow! Sometimes the snow would be waist high and I loved it. To me, there is nothing more beautiful than standing at the window watching the snow fall. It is picture perfect. I’ve actually seen people ski down the street. And of course, snowmobiles were incredibly popular. Not to mention, I’ve always been a night owl and so I love it when it gets dark at 5pm. My mother used to call me a vampire because she said that I only stirred and came to life after the sun went down. LOL! Go figure! I wish I could embrace summer, but alas, that season is the one I hate the most. We are absolute opposites.

Thanks for sharing Kelley! Great pics!

    1. Thank you! I love the snow too, but just to look at it, like on tv lol! I can’t imagine having to warm up my car or shovel snow! But yes, the fashion is the best part because summer requires almost no thought to create an outfit.

And you may have heard of Snowmageddon? Atlanta cannot even handle .5″ of snow without schools and businesses closing! It’s crazy.

      1. I know! I was like “Wow!” when you guys had two inches of snow and vehicles had to be left on the highway. In Minnesota, we would have laughed at you guys so hard, you’d probably want to fight. They don’t close the schools there unless it’s an actual blizzard and two feet of snow doesn’t even constitute a blizzard. LOL! You guys in Georgia are wimps compared to us hardy souls who make it through a Minnesota winter.

You’re most definitely not a snowbird Kelley. Bless your heart! haha!

        1. I was laughing because I was at my mom’s in Vegas and my manager was texting me about how everything was shut down in Atlanta. Grocery stores were wiped out! We got more snow than that in Vegas and it was business as usual! And I agree, we are definitely wimps!

  4. Great post! It’s interesting reading this because I’m from the United Kingdom. It’s always cold here and it’s why I like traveling out because even though I was born here, I can’t deal with the cold 😫. I used to dread winter but now I see it beyond myself and how the important the seasons are to this earth.

  5. I don’t hate winter, and can embrace it until about -8C. After that, light the fire, and pass the marshmallows! I do prepare. However, it’s the lack of light that really gets me! TY for the positive post, Kelley!
