week one: just do it

Charlotte Simpson, aka Traveling Black Widow, travels the world—often solo— and appears to be in her 60s. Her photos beg the question: what’s your excuse?

I’ve been subscribed to her for a few months now and she is a constant inspiration to just go for it! Not only is she an inspiration to travel and see the world, but also to let go of fear and step out of your comfort zone. I’ve had co-workers that never left the state of Georgia, able-bodied people I knew in L.A…………………. that had never been to the beach or the valley. Aaaaaand they seemed kinda ok with it! Scary! In 2012, I made it a goal of mine to go to at least one concert and travel somewhere I’ve never been every year for the rest of my life. Even if it’s just to a neighboring town or a quick road trip, I have kept up with my perpetual goal. I used to fret: what about when I have a baby? What about when I get old? Charlotte helped silence those worries. If you really want to do something, time won’t wait for you to be unafraid or get out of your own way. The time will pass anyway, right? Might as well enjoy the ride! And if you can inspire others along the way, you’re really winning.

Where’s the last place you traveled? Where to next??

I’m wishing you the best year of your life! Thanks for being here!

  1. Other than New Jersey the last Place I went to was Washington DC several years ago.

I traveled a lot when I was in my 20s, 30s and early 40s. Of course being in the United States Army gave me the opportunity to Travel to Europe as well as different parts of America. Back in 2004 I went on a cruise with friends and I’ve been to Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon. The cruise ship went to Nassau, Bahamas. I’ve also been to both Disney parks. Pretty much over the years I have crisscrossed the United States. Went to Jamaica, West Indies, Puerto Rico as well as much of the South.

Once I get back on my feet health wise I would enjoy more trips.

  2. There are many ways to Travel. Short day trips in the spring and summer. Church retreats. One of the best Women’s Retreats I attended was at Sandy Cove in Maryland. Beautiful.

I’m also a member of the Descendants of the 29th Colored Regiment, Connecticut because my Great, great Grandfather served in that Regiment during the Civil War. I’ve been to various Reenactors events and met Descendants from the 29th Colored Regiment as well as Descendants of the 54th Regiment on which the movie Glory was based.

On one of my trips to Washington DC I was able to find my Great, Great Grandfather name on the Colored Soldiers Monument and I attended a Dedication Ceremony in Connecticut for the 29th.

  3. As someone who has moved around a lot in her youth and often haunted by a sense of rootlessness, I don’t find myself as enamored with travel as much as others are now days. Over the years I’ve become more fascinated with the wonders I can find here in the state that I’ve come to call home and things can explore locally. That’s nothing against those who have a much stronger and broader sense of wanderlust though. But there is one place I do want to go and hope that I can do so this year and that’s Montreal, Quebec. That’s my #1 of travel destinations on my very short bucket list. The last place I’ve been was Georgia in 2017 for a family reunion.

    1. Interesting! I’ve heard this from military “brats” quite a bit, that they just want to sit down and make a home and make friends and have the same address for awhile. And even though it may not have been their choice to begin with (to relocate/travel often), I totally get it.
There is definitely always something to explore, no matter how long it takes you to get there. Thanks for sharing your testimony. Why Montreal?

      1. I come from a military family although my frequent relocations as a child had more to do with unstable circumstances rather than the military. Montreal is the closest place in driving distance where I can go to see old world architecture without having to go to Europe. I don’t like to fly. So if we can drive to Atlanta, we can drive to Montreal. 😀

  4. Ottawa is fab!
There is the Parliament Buildings and grounds making an awesome tour. The National Art Gallery of Canada, which features Indigenous Art is mind blowing. There are innumerable galleries of art and history in Ottawa.
A few colloquial areas still remain in the city centre, such as the By Ward Market. A lot of fun here!
A lot of night life is very University/ College oriented, with pubs and their special beers and menus on every corner.
Gourmet restaurants fill the city. This is Canada’s Washington, and all of our main politicians eat here a lot of the year.
The Ottawa valley is gorgeous, and slightly under populated. It’s rustic northern beauty at its finest.
Gatineau, a sister city in Quebec, is just over a bridge(s). It’s another world being in the French area of Canada. This is a whole different cultural experience.
    Ottawa, worth a visit!

    1. It wasn’t even on my radar, but it sounds lovely! I have no qualms with traveling just for food, but this sounds like an experience. Thank you for sharing!

  5. This is a really great idea. I made up my mind at the end of last year that this year I would make it a priority to do more things I always talk about doing but put off. I am hoping to travel way more and decided to start with North Carolina which is where I am now and have been for 4yrs (Greensboro) and haven’t even really explored Greensboro or any other city in NC. The last time I traveled though was this past summer on a cruise.
