Not my words and not my situation/relationship, but I can definitely relate. Sometimes we forget that parents are people; I grew up thinking mine were gods because they knew so much, had answers for my many questions. But they are imperfect. They make mistakes. They don’t always act in ways I think they should.

You don’t have to forgive every mistake especially resonates.

  1. My father was emotionally dead before he died.I didn’t even know who he was as a person because he displayed no feelings; no emotions. He was like an automaton. My mother, on the other hand, is a manipulative control freak and she is spending her waning years alone because no one can deal with her, myself included. She is also mentally ill, but in denial and when that is the case, there is no dealing with it.

    Great post.

    1. I think the hard part for some people is not being able to admit their parents aren’t/weren’t shit. Even if you have good parents, they are still flawed. They are not perfect. They are humans that maybe shouldn’t have had kids or been in their kids’ lives.

  2. I love how your blog addresses such niche topics. Lol I understand how you also saw your parents as gods. Thought the same of my father, one of the brightest geniuses I know yet…he did things emotionally I can’t necessarily forget.

I have plenty in his defence, but none of it makes what he did/does right. Keep shining Kelley 🙂

    1. Thank you! That means a lot.

And yes, we can love them without liking everything they did when raising us or everything they do now as we see through adult eyes. We have to recognize the bs and reparent ourselves in some aspects.
